School Shooting At Southern Village: Was This A Muslim Honor Killing?

Of course, this site asks the question no one will ask because of the prevalence of political correctness in the media and locally. What appears to be known now is that there was a restraining order on this man who had been harassing this teacher for some time. It seems at present this woman was killed because the man's personal and religious "honor" had been offended. Don't expect the local Triangle press to pursue this avenue of reporting. You'll have to find the true information online.

A Carrboro man was charged with murder Friday in the fatal shooting of a woman in front of Mary Scroggs Elementary School minutes before school was to be dismissed for the long holiday weekend.

Ali Cherfaoui, 49, whose address is listed as N.C. 54, Carrboro, was arrested about three miles from the school in Southern Village as EMS workers were trying to save Chahnaz Kebaier, 40, who lived on Copperline Drive, a few blocks from the school.

The shooting happened just after 2 p.m., and Kebaier died at UNC Hospitals at 4:08. She had been shot multiple times in the head and body, according to a Chapel Hill Police Department news release.

N.C. approves Apple's plans to build fuel cell center facility

North Carolina's Utilities Commission has approved Apple's plans to build a fuel cell center for renewable power generation at its data facility in western North Carolina.

The commission decision was made Wednesday. (Read ruling here.)

Earlier this month, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), targeted by Greenpeace International over its energy consumption, said its 500,000-square-foot data center in Maiden, N.C., will be powered entirely by renewable sources by the end of the year.

The Utilities Commission had already approved Apple's request to build a solar farm at the facility on Thursday. (Read the ruling here.)

Greenpeace demonstrators had criticized the world’s largest technology company for using too much coal to power the data facility.

A troubled Denver police officer has been reinstated after a three-member panel of the city’s Civil Service Commission overturned his termination for driving 143 miles per hour while drunk.

Derrick Saunders was arrested on June 17, 2010 for cruising 88 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. He had a .089 blood alcohol level at the time of his arrest.

This wasn’t the officer’s first run-in with the law. Since he was hired by the police force in 2007, other felonious allegations against Saunders include brandishing a gun to scare McDonald’s employees into working faster.

ABC 7 reports that in 2009, Saunders, then assigned to securing Denver International Airport, grew impatient while waiting for his order at the fast food restaurant. He allegedly pulled a gun on employees when they failed to prepare his food with the utmost haste.

Chapel Hill police said Tuesday that a strange man has come up to a woman walking alone on Church Street and grabbed her buttocks twice in the past week.

The first incident happened around 3 a.m. on May 19, and the second at about 11:20 a.m. on Monday, police said. In both cases, the man walked away after grabbing the women.

The man in the first incident is described as black, 23 to 26 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, weighing 170 to 180 pounds. He had short hair and a muscular build and wasn't wearing a shirt.

Tonya Dixon-Neely teaches Social Studies at North Rowan High. She is heard on the video telling a student that he could get arrested for being critical of President Obama, and that people were arrested for being critical of President Bush.

"Effective today, Tanya Dixon-Neely has been suspended with pay while a thorough investigation is being conducted," school officials told WBTV when asked about Dixon-Neely's status.

A man of Southern mill-town roots whose talent as a trial lawyer made him a millionaire, and then a politician with a gift for wooing voters far from home, has placed his public reputation and future in the hands of a jury.

The judgment on the Democratic Party’s 2004 vice presidential nominee and former one-term senator from North Carolina will determine whether Johnny Reid Edwards, 58, merely shamed himself and his family in a sexual affair hidden from his dying wife with the help of rich benefactors, or broke the law.

“I don’t think there is a lot of thirst for him going to jail, and that’s what it comes down to,” said J.F. “Ferrel” Guillory, director of the Program on Public Life at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “Is he a sinner? Yes. Is he a criminal? Maybe not.”

The federal government’s case centered on more than $700,000 in “Bunny Money” that an heiress, Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, now 101 years old, paid for the expenses of Edwards’s mistress. The government argued that Edwards violated campaign- financing laws in the undisclosed expenses of Rielle Hunter, who bore their child, Frances Quinn Hunter, in 2008.

The jury in Greensboro, North Carolina, began deliberations yesterday and recessed for the weekend without a verdict. It’s expected to resume its work May 21.

Friday, 91, has been hospitalized in critical condition for a few days, but his family said in a statement that “he is slightly improved after having a permanent pacemaker placed” on Thursday.

A judge has put Chapel Hill's cellphone ban while driving on hold.

Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson issued an injunction Wednesday, delaying the enforcement of both the town's cellphone ban and new towing ordinance until a hearing on Monday.

The cellphone ban was to take effect June 1.

The towing ordinance, which limits how much tow truck operators can charge and restricts where and when vehicles can be towed from downtown, was to take effect Tuesday. It includes a provision requiring towers to report each vehicle towed to police at the time of the tow.

George King, owner of George's Towing & Recovery, sued the Town of Chapel Hill over both ordinances.

Wave after wave of young men surged forward to take turns punching and kicking their victim.

The victim's friend, a young woman, tried to pull him back into his car. Attackers came after her, pulling her hair, punching her head and causing a bloody scratch to the surface of her eye. She called 911. A recording told her all lines were busy. She called again. Busy. On her third try, she got through and, hysterical, could scream only their location.

It happened four blocks from where they work, here at The Virginian-Pilot.

Two weeks have passed since reporters Dave Forster and Marjon Rostami - friends to me and many others at the newspaper - were attacked on a Saturday night as they drove home from a show at the Attucks Theatre. They had stopped at a red light, in a crowd of at least 100 young people walking on the sidewalk. Rostami locked her car door. Someone threw a rock at her window. Forster got out to confront the rock-thrower, and that's when the beating began.

Neither suffered grave injuries, but both were out of work for a week. Forster's torso ached from blows to his ribs, and he retained a thumb-sized bump on his head. Rostami fears to be alone in her home. Forster wishes he'd stayed in the car.

Many stories that begin this way end much worse. Another colleague recently wrote about the final defendant to be sentenced in the beating death of 19-year-old James Robertson in East Ocean View five years ago. In that case, a swarm of gang members attacked Robertson and two friends. Robertson's friends got away and called for help; police arrived to find Robertson's stripped, swollen corpse.

Leave it to MSNBC to attempt to guilt socially conservative African-American Christians into acting against their religious convictions on same-sex marriage in the name of civil rights and "tolerance." Anchor Thomas Roberts, who is openly gay, conducted a softball interview with an African-American Baptist pastor from the Tar Heel State who opposes Amendment 1, the pro-traditional marriage ballot initiative going before North Carolina voters on May 8.

"For African-American churchgoers, this creates quite a quandary... while some religious leaders are urging their congregations to stick with tradition, some high profile ministers are speaking out against it to promote tolerance," Roberts noted in his introduction of Dr. Ricky Woods. With his first question to Woods, Roberts described the disagreement among African-American Christians as pitting those in favor of "social justice" against backers of "tradition" and "moral values" (emphasis mine):

Amy Locklear Hertel to Head American Indian Center at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Amy Locklear Hertel, newly-selected director of the American Indian Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was admonished by her grandmother to pursue her education. “Grandmother told me to get all the education you can. What you learn in your head no one can take away. You need to learn all you can and use it to serve your community. I like to think she would be proud of me,” says Locklear Hertel, who starts her new job May 1.

“All the education you can get” so far includes a B.A. in interpersonal communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), a master’s degree in social work and a Juris doctor from Washington University in St. Louis and a nearly-completed Ph.D. from Washington University’s George Warren Brown School of Social Work.

Scientists Awarded $2.4 Million to Study Genetic Variation in People with Diabetes

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A UNC-led team of scientists has received a $2.4 million grant to study genetic variations in people with diabetes.

The goal of the study is to identify genetic variations that may help predict the response to various treatment options for type 2 diabetes to reduce cardiovascular disease, said Dr. John Buse, co-principal investigator and director of the Diabetes Care Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

“We hope this work will enable us to target interventions to patients most likely to benefit and least likely to be harmed,” Buse said. “The genes containing these variants may also prove to be novel targets for drug development, leading to new medicines for improving outcomes for diabetic patients in the future.”

The 4-year grant was awarded by National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (Award Number R01HL110380). This project is one of several in the area of pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine supported by the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute, the academic home of NIH’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) at UNC. The CTSA program aims to improve human health by transforming the research and training environment to enhance the efficiency and quality of clinical and translational research.

The Durham Police Department detective who supervised the city’s ill-fated investigation of the Duke lacrosse case apparently offered the lead role to Duke University’s police, who turned it down.

Questioned by lawyers late last year, Duke University Police Department Sgt. Gary Smith said former Durham Police Department Sgt. Mark Gottlieb asked him in mid-March of 2006 whether Duke would take control of the investigation.

Smith – who was basically in charge of the Duke police’s investigations unit at the time because it didn’t have a lieutenant – said no.

“He comes in and he says to you, ‘Is Duke going to take the lead since you own the house?’” lawyer David Thompson, representing 38 former lacrosse players who are suing the city and Duke, asked Smith during a Dec. 30 deposition.

“Well, I told him that I wasn’t aware that Duke owned the [Buchanan Boulevard] house, and no, we weren’t,” Smith answered.

“OK. But he asked you?” Thompson replied.

“Yes,” Smith said, adding that he’d checked later with a higher-up in the Duke police, Phyllis Cooper, who agreed with the decision.

The Religon of Peace: Red Cross doctor found beheaded in Pakistan

QUETTA, Pakistan —The beheaded body of a kidnapped British doctor working for the International Committee of the Red Cross was found by the roadside on Sunday in the southwestern Pakistan city of Quetta, police and Red Cross officials said.

Khalil Rasjed Dale, 60, was abducted by suspected militants on Jan 5 while on his way home from work.

"The ICRC condemns in the strongest possible terms this barbaric act," ICRC Director-General Yves Daccord said in a statement. "All of us at the ICRC and at the British Red Cross share the grief and outrage of Khalil's family and friends."

British Foreign Secretary William Hague also condemned the killing.

Two states strike down “Amazon tax”, Rule That Online Retailers DO NOT Have To Collect State Taxes

A federal court has thrown out a 2010 Colorado law, which had already been temporarily blocked in federal court last year, meant to spur online retailers like Amazon to collect state sales tax. ‘I conclude that the veil provided by the words of the act and the regulations is too thin to support the conclusion that the act and the regulations regulate in-state and out-of-state retailers even-handedly,’ U.S. District Judge Robert Blackburn wrote in his opinion. The law and the rules to carry it out ‘impose an undue burden on interstate commerce’ and are unconstitutional, the judge wrote.

A Cook County Circuit judge ruled against the state of Illinois in its attempt to tax online sales from out-of-state companies.

Judge Robert Lopez Cepero today ruled that the 2011 law doesn’t pass muster because simply having an affiliated company in the state that makes sales or refers customers to an online retailer doesn’t create enough of a presence, or nexus, for tax purposes.

He also ruled that the Illinois law is unenforceable because of a federal Internet tax moratorium that runs through 2014.

ONDON — Is London about to elect a mayor who has been accused of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism?

Until last week, former mayor Ken Livingstone was trailing the incumbent Boris Johnson in opinion polls by as much as six points. But now, only days before the election on Thursday, May 3, the two are neck-and-neck, separated by just two percentage points, according to pollster YouGov.

If Livingstone, who was mayor between 2000-2008, is returned to office, it will be greeted with concern by much of the Jewish community, which makes up around 200,000 of Greater London’s population of 8.2 million. Livingstone, who belongs to the left-wing Labour party, has clashed with them repeatedly. Even some of the most avid Jewish Labourites have come out publicly this time to explain why they cannot vote for him.

Livingstone’s attitude to Jews and other minorities has been a factor for the wider electorate as well. On March 1, Jewish Labour supporters attended a private meeting with Livingstone in order to explore ways in which he could reconnect with his alienated Jewish voters. Livingstone responded that they would not vote for him anyway, as the Jewish community is “rich.” Six of the attendees wrote a letter expressing concern to British Labour Party leader Ed Miliband (who is himself halachically Jewish), which was later leaked, garnering national attention.

What president flies purposefully into the eye of a perfectly awful, two-front political storm, especially one as sordid as that plaguing North Carolina this week? Obama's arrival in the Tar Heel State coincided with former Sen. John Edwards' trial, as well as an exploding sexual harassment scandal involving the state's Democratic Party leader. Jay Parmley recently resigned as executive director of the state party after an employee accused him of showing him a lewd photograph and making inappropriate sexual remarks.

Talk about the audacity of hope. Or is it the incompetency of arrogance?

Trouble is one thing presidents typically don't seek out -- especially during a tough re-election season. And North Carolina is nothing but trouble these days.

Edwards' trial, which began Monday, not only promises resurrection of all the salacious details of his doomed tryst with Rielle Hunter, with whom he fathered a child while his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer, but several high-profile Washington Democrats, including Obama's deputy communications director, will likely be called as witnesses.

Perhaps the president is merely displaying confidence in his incumbency, or solidarity with his staff members. On the other hand, is he perhaps clueless? As Dana Perino, former communications director for George W. Bush, remarked: "Over my dead body would I have sent President Bush to a state like that to do an event."

It isn't that Obama has anything to do with either Edwards or Parmley, but he risks being dragged into the fray. You don't want to be in the same camera frame or news cycle with the least attractive members of your party. Moreover, plenty of media will be on hand to ask uncomfortable questions, such as, for example: "Mr. President, will you be visiting the grave of Elizabeth Edwards while in the state?"

Speaking at the University of North Carolina about a bill to prevent some interest rates on some student loans from doubling, President Obama let loose with a lengthy dig at the state’s Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) for comments she made dismissing student’s complaints about their debt load.

“She said she had ‘very little tolerance for people who tell me they graduate with debt because there’s no reason for that.’ I’m just quoting here,” Obama said. “The students who rack up student loan debt are just ‘sitting on their butts having opportunity dumped in your lap.’ I’m reading it here. I didn’t make this up.”

Jay Parmley's Dick Causing More Problems For North Carolina Democrats

It’s unclear as of now if the North Carolina Democratic Party used taxpayer funds in the financial settlement it made with former communications staffer Adriadn Ortega after he alleged former NCDP executive director Jay Parmley sexually harassed him.

Parmley resigned a little over a week ago after Ortega’s allegations surfaced publicly several months after they were made. With the revelation of Ortega’s allegations came the news that the NCDP made a financial settlement with Ortega and had both Ortega and Parmley sign non-disclosure agreements to keep the issue quiet.

To this day, it’s unclear if taxpayer money was used to make that financial settlement and the NCDP won’t answer questions related to that aspect of the scandal.

Jay Parmley, already accused of sexual harassment, now faces ex-girlfriend’s HIV accusation

Rebecca Burgin, a long-time former girlfriend of former North Carolina Democratic Party executive director Jay Parmley, told The Daily Caller that she believes Parmley infected her with HIV.

Parmley resigned on April 15 amid sexual harassment allegations from a former young male staffer.

Burgin, a 29-year-old Oklahoman, has shared her story with TheDC, including the revelation that Parmley’s lawyer offered her health coverage, paid for by the Democratic National Committee, to manage her illness. She ultimately declined that offer, fearing it would constitute insurance fraud. Parmley, she said, abandoned her a few months later.

On April 13, TheDC first exposed allegations, leveled in December by former North Carolina Democratic Party communications staffer Adriadn Ortega, that Parmley showed him a picture of a penis, gave him unwanted shoulder rubs and made apparent sexual advances toward him. Ortega also alleged that Parmley discussed with him in detail his past sexual activity, including “solicit[ing] sex from gay websites.”

Parmley’s ex-girlfriend Rebecca Burgin told TheDC that Parmley forever changed her life by making her HIV-positive. She’s worried, she said, that Parmley may have done to someone else what he did to her.

“My motivation for talking to you was that I have read the articles, I have read the letter [that Ortega sent to Parmley detailing sexual harassment allegations] and everything like that,” Burgin said.

Two weeks from now, North Carolina will hold a public referendum on what could become one of the toughest anti-gay measures in the country: a far-reaching proposal to amend the state constitution to ban civil unions and domestic partnerships. But President Obama is not expected to touch the subject when he appears in Chapel Hill on Tuesday — even though it is roiling the electorate there.

Instead, Obama will talk about college loans, his aides said, kicking off a two-day, three-state tour designed to energize the youth vote. His delicate sidestep of Amendment One, a ballot initiative to be decided May 8 that would recognize marriage between a man and a woman as the only legal domestic partnership in North Carolina, is seen by some as another sign that he is not fully committed to gay rights — an interpretation that could dampen the enthusiasm of the young voters he is trying to court.

Pittsboro Resident & UNC Teacher & Writer Doris Betts dies at 79 of lung cancer

Doris Betts, who wrote novels set in her native South and taught creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has died, her son said Sunday. She was 79.

Betts died at her Pittsboro home of lung cancer on Saturday, said Erskine Betts of Apex.

Betts's seventh novel, "Souls Raised from the Dead," won the Southern Book Award in 1995.

Betts broke out of her native region for her last novel, "The Sharp Teeth of Love," which explored the prickly fellowship of three damaged people in contemporary Reno, Nev.

"Southern women writers literally are a hot topic, but as a result, you get typecast. You have expectations. There is a temptation to go on meeting those, doing the easy thing. Yeah, I wanted to do something different," she told The Associated Press in 1997.

An only child of millworkers in Statesville in western North Carolina, she learned to read before first grade. She wrote poetry until she went to Women's College in Greensboro - now the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She switched to prose and immediately won recognition for her short stories.

"Gentle Insurrection," her first collection of short stories, was published in 1954, and her first novel, "Tall Houses in Winter," followed in 1957.

The biggest political story in Raleigh last week was not the debates between the candidates vying for the Democratic nomination for governor. It was the troubles at the N.C. Democratic Party.

Executive director Jay Parmley resigned on April 15 after news accounts that the party had paid a former staff member as part of a settlement over sexual-harassment charges against Parmley.

The agreement included a nondisclosure clause, but leaked emails confirmed the rumors of the allegations that had been circulating in Raleigh for months. Parmley denies that he sexually harassed anybody.

Gov. Bev Perdue first brushed off questions about the settlement, calling it a party personnel matter. Monday she finally added her voice to a growing list of Democratic elected officials calling for the resignation of party chair David Parker.

Parker apparently approved the settlement with the former employee and briefed Perdue about it in December. It's hard to imagine a scenario in which Parker does not resign. That may have happened by the time you read this.

If there is a delay, it might be that party elders are scrambling to figure out what happens next, who becomes the party's chair and its director of day-to-day operations in Raleigh.

Those decisions would be important enough in a normal political season but they take on even more significance this year with the Democratic National Convention coming to Charlotte and the fact that North Carolina is a highly contested swing state in the presidential election.

Democrats are also scrambling to regain seats they lost in the General Assembly in the 2010 election and facing the potential loss of several congressional seats in November because of the gerrymandered districts drawn by Republican legislative leaders.

Then there is the uphill struggle to hold the governorship after Perdue announced she was not seeking re-election. Former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, the presumptive Republican nominee, holds a significant lead in the polls over each of his potential Democratic challengers and has raised more money than all of them combined.

A massive hacker attack has crippled an overseas website that has reported extensively on China's biggest political turmoil in years, underscoring the pivotal role the Internet has played in the unfolding scandal.

North Carolina-based Boxun.com was forced to move to a new web hosting service Friday after its previous host said the attacks were threatening its entire business, website manager Watson Meng told The Associated Press. He believes the attacks were ordered by China's security services, but it isn't clear where they were launched from.

The assaults on Boxun's server followed days of reporting on Bo Xilai, formerly one of the country's most powerful politicians, who was fired as head of the mega-city of Chongqing and suspended from the Communist Party's powerful Politburo amid accusations of his wife's involvement in the murder of a British businessman.

The scandal has deeply embarrassed Communist Party leaders obsessed with controlling their image and imposing strict secrecy over their inner workings.

When there was a controversy at state Democratic Party headquarters surrounding the party’s executive director in 1971, Gov. Bob Scott had a simple solution – he got the resignation of party chairman Eugene Simmons and called a news conference to name his replacement.

That is the way North Carolina politics – and politics across the country for the matter – worked for generations.

But North Carolina governors no longer control who is state party chairman.

And the current train crash at Democratic Headquarters on Hillsborough Street has been made worse by the disconnect between the governor and the party.

The divorce can be traced to February 2005, when Jerry Meek was elected party chairman even though Democratic Gov. Mike Easley and most of the party establishment backed another candidate.

David Parker, a Statesville attorney, was elected state chairman last year, even though Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue backed state Rep. Bill Faison for the job.

As a result, the Democratic Party is now a collection of shifting factions, owing their allegiance to no political leader.

Not like a normal business

When Perdue and other party leaders called for Parker to step down as party chairman, Parker, who didn’t owe his job to Perdue or elected others, responded that the majority of the 700-plus-member Democratic Executive Committee still supported him.
